The mission of Why Jiu Jitsu & Self Defense is to help build our students into strong, confident, and capable human beings. Through intelligent and technically sound training methods, Why Jiu Jitsu and Self Defense will provide the consistent and disciplined student with an invaluable skill set that stays with you for life!
Why Jiu Jitsu offers training for adults and kids, both in the traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu kimono (gi), and submission wrestling (no gi). Our curriculum is perfect for beginning and advanced students. In addition to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the skilled instructors at Why Jiu Jitsu teach the arts of Wrestling (Greco Roman, freestyle, folkstyle, and catch), Judo, Russian Sambo, MMA, and Modern Combatives.
Coach Ian has been training and competing in the grappling arts for over 30 years, and recieved his black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2022 from retired UFC star and technical master Mac Danzig. Coach Ian has competed consistently since he first stepped on a wrestling mat in Michigan at age 11, achieving accolades in events like the Army Combatives Championships, Grappling Industries, PNW Invitational, and the 2024 ADCC Las Vegas Open. Coach Ian previously served in the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division, where he became a Level 2 Modern Army Combatives Instructor, among other achievments. Coach Ian's first student was his now 18 year old son, who is an active duty Infantry Marine. He also currently coaches his other children in kids class, and looks forward to watching them develop alongside their teammates at Why Jiu Jitsu!
